On Hosting Children

We host children from the countries of Belarus and Ukraine. Most of the radiation from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster fell on those countries. The children there suffer from a breakdown of their immune system due to constant bombardment by radiation.

Hosting in 2010
We host the children for approximately 6 weeks during the summer. For Summer 2010 the children will be arriving around June 19, and leaving around August 4.

The children's medical and dental expenses are donated by the medical professionals who provide the services. We fundraise as much as possible to help reduce the cost. The rest of the expense is borne by the hosting family. For the summer of 2010 hosting will cost $1400 per child for both new and return children. Eighty percent of the cost is for transportation services and the remaining 20% for visa and interpreter fees.

The children's primary medical problem is a weakening of their immune system caused by a combination of malnutrition and radiation exposure. This condition is known as "Chernobyl Aids". Treatment for this is simple, plenty of fresh nutritious foods and vitamin supplements, administered in a loving and radiation free environment.

Hosting in 2009
Unfortunately due to the lack of an agreement with the Belarussian government, we were unable to host in 2009. Instead we brought coats and boots to children in three Belarusian villages that our host children have come from in previous years. We were also able to supply the schools in those villages with long overdue items: copiers, TV monitors (1 per school to replace the 20 year old ones they had!), sports equipment, sound systems, etc. With your participation, we look forward to hosting again in 2010!
